Helping young talent to succeed
26th May 2014

HTL Insurance adviser Kim Dunlop-Roberts has been busy behind the scenes helping to support local emerging artist Rowena "Cressa" Komene. Read about how we're helping Rowena to launch her art career.

Seven months ago 26 year old Rowena Komene had not picked up a paint brush, or even considered herself an artist. Now she’s preparing for her debut art exhibition at Real Tart Gallery, thanks to some help from two of her biggest fans - HTL Insurance Adviser Kim Dunlop-Roberts and Executive Manager at Real Tart Gallery, Jill White.

Although her father is highly accomplished local artist Stephen Te-Kotuku Komene, Rowena was unaware that she could paint until Jill White challenged her to produce an artwork during a routine visit to the gallery. After some gentle encouragement, Rowena accepted the challenge and began to paint. “When she showed me what she produced, I was blown away,” says Jill White. “Rowena has the ability to blend complex patterns and colours which is an extraordinary talent. Her work is truly unique and unlike any other artist I have seen in Taranaki.”

Rowena’s work is inspired by past experiences, her Maori heritage and her incredible zest for life. All of these feelings manifest themselves throughout her pieces and are expressed by the use of complex pattern designs and bold, deep colours. As a result, Rowena produces highly emotive artworks which are intriguing, unique and inspirational.

Rowena is very humble about her talent and is grateful to have received support and mentoring from HTL Insurance Adviser Kim Dunlop-Roberts. An art lover herself, Kim’s company, HTL Insurance, have generously offered to sponsor Rowena’s debut exhibition and are hosting the exhibition launch at the Real Tart Gallery.

“We’re delighted to help Rowena launch her career in art,” says Kim. “She’s had to overcome adversity in her life and yet, she is full of positivity and is focused on doing something she’s truly passionate about. Rowena is inspirational and a great role model for our youth,” Kim says. “We’re proud to be able to help her to follow her dreams.”

If you would like to see Rowena's works, please click here to visit our facebook page or pop into the Real Tart Art Gallery on Egmont Street in New Plymouth.
